Birmingham Stallions Sign DB A.J. Thomas, Release Eli Walker

Last week, the Birmingham Stallions made a move in the secondary. The team signed safety A.J. Thomas, and released Eli Walker.

A.J. Thomas joins the organization with NFL experience, having been with the Chicago Bears for the past two NFL seasons.

Thomas played the entirety of his college football at Western Michigan. He was excellent through five seasons, posting 216 tackles, three sacks, and two interceptions. A.J. started in 26 of his final 29 games played at the school.

This led to Thomas signing with the Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2022. While he was cut from the regular season roster, he made the practice squad, and ultimately was activated for a few games. A.J. Thomas posted four tackles for Chicago in 2022.

He spent the last year or so on the practice squad, but was released by the Bears on the 29th of October. Now, he will look to continue his professional career in the UFL, signing with the Birmingham Stallions.

Final Thoughts

The tough pill to swallow with this addition is the loss of safety Eli Walker. Walker was picked up by the Stallions during the dispersal draft process from the Pittsburgh Maulers. Eli was one of the USFL’s top safeties in 2023, so it’s expected that he will land somewhere.

General Manager Zach Potter continues to attract former NFL talent to the roster. The team just made a huge splash in signing QB Matt Corral, and also brought back All-USFL LB DeMarquis Gates who was with Thomas in Chicago.

With the roster set at 75 players, the Birmingham Stallions can’t make any more moves until training camp begins.
