Birmingham Stallions Re-Sign TE La’Michael Pettway

The band is getting back together. After losing 16 players to the NFL this offseason, the Birmingham Stallions have re-signed most of those players. Last week, they added another piece in wide receiver/tight end hybrid La’Michael Pettway.

Michigan Panthers

Pettway began his USFL career in Michigan. In 2022 he was one of the Panther’s top receiving targets, catching 24 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. The Stallions were able to steal him away from the Panthers in 2023.

Birmingham Stallions

Pettway joined the Stallions a week into the 2023 season. Despite a crowded receiving room, Pettway found his way onto the field throughout the year, playing in seven games during the regular season. Over those seven games, Pettway caught eight passes for 99 yards. He was a great red zone target for Alex McGough, as two of his eight catches (25%) were red zone touchdowns.

His biggest play came during week eight of the regular season. Trailing 24-20 with three minutes to go in the fourth, MVP quarterback Alex McGough marched the Birmingham Stallions down the field. With 0:32 left on the clock, McGough dropped back and found Pettway in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown. Protective Stadium erupted as Pettway made a name for himself in Birmingham.

Pettway played in both postseason games for the Stallions en route to winning a USFL Championship. He had four catches for 37 yards. Along with Jace Sternberger and Thaddeus Moss, the Stallions tight end unit was the best in the league last year and a big reason the Stallions were able to repeat as champs.

Indianapolis Colts

After the season, Pettway signed with the Indianapolis Colts. Unfortunately for him, he was injured during training camp and ended up being waived. His injury prevented him from getting another shot in the NFL this season.

Back to Birmingham

Pettway has chosen to return to Birmingham, adding another feather to Zach Potter’s cap. The Stallions tight end room is even deeper now, as Pettway rejoins Sternberger and Moss as well as Chris Pierce, Jr., who was signed this offseason. Along with the wide receiving corps the Stallions have, quarterback J’Mar Smith looks to have quite a few weapons at his disposal heading into 2024.
