This Arlington Renegades pass rush has been impressive – and it just got even better. The team has signed DE Taco Charlton, bolstering a roster that was already seeing plenty of success at the position. With Charlton being signed, the Renegades have released EDGE Tuzar Skipper.
Taco Charlton is no stranger to spring football. He was a key piece to a Stallions’ pass rush that was outstanding a season ago, with 14 tackles, five TFL’s, and six sacks to his name. Taco didn’t start in any games, but was utilized often alongside names such as Jonathan Garvin and Dondrea Tillman. Despite his impressive stint in ‘24, Birmingham opted to go in a different direction this offseason.
Charlton is a veteran, who’s had a lengthy football career up until this point. Beginning in college at Michigan, Charlton proved himself year after year, allowing himself to see a larger role with the team after every season.
As a junior, he started in three of 13 games played, totaling 30 tackles and 5.5 sacks. This led to a tremendous senior campaign with 40 tackles and 10 sacks, starting in all 11 games.
Taco Charlton was highly sought after by NFL teams coming out of college. He was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys, and played with the team for three years. Across that span, he racked up 46 tackles and four sacks in 27 active games.
In 2019, the Miami Dolphins picked Charlton up midway through the season. In ten games that year, Taco posted 21 tackles and five sacks, making five starts.
Since then, Charlton had a tough time maintaining a roster spot. He was primarily a practice squad guy for a few different teams, and then turned to the UFL to get back on an active roster.
Now, he joins a Renegades defense that already features the likes of Chris Odom, Willie Taylor III, Will Clarke, and others at EDGE who have been playing tremendous football already. Bringing in Taco is another home run move from GM Rick Mueller, and is one that should make a good defense even better.
In the process, the team has cut Tuzar Skipper. Skipper, the former Seattle Sea Dragons standout, was acquired by Arlington via trade in the 2023 offseason. He missed most of the 2024 season in the UFL due to an injury suffered in week two. Skipper played in a couple of games this year (52 snaps), with one assisted tackle to his name.
