Arlington Renegades Sign K Jonathan Garibay, Russolino Injured

Kicker injuries have been a big part of the UFL this week. The Arlington Renegades have made a move, signing K Jonathan Garibay, due to starting kicker Taylor Russolino dealing with an injury of his own.

Russolino isn’t necessarily ruled out for Sunday’s game quite yet. From what we’re told, he is dealing with a hip related injury, and it’s something that could sideline him for a week or two.

This is very similar to what the Birmingham Stallions dealt with this week as well. Chris Blewitt will miss about a week, which led to the team signing former Maulers kicker Ramiz Ahmed.

Jonathan Garibay

Now, after a successful workout this morning with Arlington, Jonathan Garibay is signing with Arlington as assurance in case Taylor has to miss some time. If Russolino isn’t in a position to play on Sunday, Jonathan will fill in.

Garibay is best known for his time at Texas Tech. He kicked at the school from 2019-2021. In 2020, he played in five games during the shortened COVID season. This was the first legitimate kicking opportunity for Jonathan at Texas Tech, and he went 8-11 on field goals with a long of 48 yards.

In 2021, he had an excellent year with the team, hitting 15 of 16 field goal attempts in 12 games. His long was from 62 yards out, and his only miss was from beyond 50 yards. Additionally, Garibay was 49 of 50 on XP’s.

This led to a stint with the Dallas Cowboys, where Jonathan competed with Lirim Hajrullahu. He struggled during this training camp battle, and was released after a rather underwhelming performance.

Since then, Garibary spent some time in the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and put up decent numbers during the 2023 preseason. After training and staying ready, Garibay now heads to the UFL to continue his professional career.

Final Thoughts

Taylor Russolino has been one of spring football’s most consistent kickers throughout the last few years. He was with the St. Louis Battlehawks in 2020, which led to an NFL opportunity with the Denver Broncos.

Since 2023, Taylor has kicked for the Arlington Renegades, and he’s done a solid job. He’s 5-6 on field goal attempts this season, with a long of 52 yards. His kickoffs have also improved since a season ago. Hopefully, Russolino will be a go sooner than later for a special teams unit that’s smooth and steady in Arlington.
