Arlington Renegades Make Final Cuts In UFL Training Camp

The Arlington Renegades decided to make their final cuts in UFL training camp today. As it stands right now, the team rosters 50 players – giving them nine days to finalize locking things in for the season ahead.

There are some surprises in this list, as expected. With the amount of talent that each team brought to training camp, you could make a case for anyone to make the final rosters.

Offensive Cuts

RB Devin Darrington
WR Sy Barnett
OL Marquis Lucas

Right off the bat, the most shocking release is RB Devin Darrington. Darrington was picked up quickly by the Arlington Renegades during the XFL Dispersal Draft, and was an outstanding running back for the Orlando Guardians in 2023.

According to UFLSIFN reporter Anthony Miller, Darrington was getting the majority of the snaps along with De’Veon Smith during their open practice. With Leddie Brown and Dae Dae Hunter in that backfield, though, there just wasn’t enough room for Devin it seems.

WR Sy Barnett is a jack of all trades, who was primed to make an impact in the special teams game as well. It’s tough to see him go, given he is the “swiss army knife” of this team.

OL Marquis Lucas was a late addition to training camp for depth, with plenty of spring football experience to his name. If there are injuries throughout the year, he’d be one of the first that they should call back.

Defensive Cuts

DT Roderick Perry
DL Darrius Moragne
DE/LB Noah Taylor
LB Christian Sam
DB Jared Mayden

Roderick Perry was an offseason addition, coming off an NFL camp stint with the Cleveland Browns. Perry was a name in the UFL that went under the radar, but is an athlete who should get another opportunity sooner than later.

Darrius Moragne was looking to make his pro football comeback, after suffering an injury during the USFL’s 2022 season with the Pittsburgh Maulers. He was having a fantastic campaign there prior to being injured.

Noah Taylor and Christian Sam are two talented defensive players in their own regard. But, with the amount of talent this team holds in its front seven, you can’t keep everyone. Sam was just placed on the suspended list, so it’s not surprising to see him officially released. It’s worth noting that Christian Sam was the first USFL to NFL signing of the modern era in 2022.

Finally, Jared Mayden was an offseason signing late in December. He played at Alabama and brought depth to this secondary – one that was completely revamped during the dispersal process.

Final Thoughts

Obviously, this was not an easy day for General Manager Rick Mueller and Head Coach Bob Stoops. The Renegades are the defending XFL Champions, but unfortunately have had to let go of some key pieces throughout this process.

Just a week and a half ago, Arlington released 16 players that they had brought to camp. With these final cutdowns, the Renegades are now set to take on the Birmingham Stallions in their home opener on March 30th.
