Cincinnati Bengals Signing XFL Arlington Renegades QB Drew Plitt To PS | St. Louis Battlehawks

Arlington Renegades Cut Roster Down In UFL Training Camp

Sunday was a tough day for every UFL team, as the Arlington Renegades took part in cutting their roster down by a pretty large margin ahead of the season.

QB Drew Plitt

With four quarterbacks having been brought to camp, Drew Plitt now becomes a free agent. Arlington clearly was going to keep Luis Perez who helped lead the team to a Championship victory last year. New additions Holton Ahlers and Lindsey Scott Jr. have looked good in camp as well. Plitt started in a few games for the Renegades last year, but with the talented signal callers this team already rosters, his release isn’t a major shock.

RB Morgan Ellison

Morgan Ellison is a name that I’m surprised to see on the waiver list. Ellison dealt with injuries in Seattle last year, but was quite productive when healthy. He was picked up by Arlington during the dispersal process. With De’Veon Smith and Leddie Brown returning, alongside the additions of Devin Darrington and Dae Dae Hunter, Morgan will have to look elsewhere to find a new home.

WR Calvin Jackson

Speaking of surprises, Calvin Jackson was cut on Sunday. He was one of the top pickups for Arlington this offseason. Calvin had a great career at Washington State, totaling 987 yards and seven scores in his senior season. He’s spent time in the NFL with the New York Jets, and had been selected in the dispersal draft after signing a LOI with the Sea Dragons.

WR Charles Hall

Hall was signed by Arlington this offseason. He was a dual sport athlete at Virginia Union University, running track alongside playing football. Charles averaged 25 YPR during his time there. While he’s on the smaller side, his speed is his strong suit, and Hall is likely to generate more professional interest soon.

WR Matt Landers

Matt Landers has already found a new home, being picked up by the San Antonio Brahmas off of waivers. It’s interesting to see the Renegades releasing so many of the wide outs they had snagged during the offseason. Seems like Bob Stoops & Co. are satisfied keeping most of the same targets they had last year.

TE Jared Scott

It’s a shame to see Jared Scott go, as he was one of the most underrated additions during the dispersal draft. Scott was primarily utilized as a blocking TE with the New Orleans Breakers last year, and also spent time with the Indianapolis Colts.

OT Teton Saltes

Teton has been in the spring football scene for a couple of years. He played with the Michigan Panthers in 2022, and saw action in one game for the Renegades last year.

OG Jake Stetz

Stetz had been protected by the Renegades, having started in six games for the team during the 2023 season. Injuries did hamper his campaign to an extent. Jake is easily a prospect who could get claimed by another UFL team looking for offensive line depth.

C Naasir Watkins

Watkins was just recently signed, following an injury to Garrett McGhin, who is out for the season. Naasir had originally signed a LOI with Vegas. He started in 11 games for Liberty University in 2022.

DT Doug Costin

It’s a bit surprising to see Doug Costin become a free agent again. He won the 2022 USFL Championship with the Birmingham Stallions, and then won the XFL Championship last year with the Arlington Renegades. Costin also had a couple of NFL stints following both seasons.

DT Trevon Coley

Trevon Coley was an offseason addition for Arlington, and one that seemed likely to make the roster. He has years of legitimate NFL experience, totaling over 100 tackles throughout his NFL career. Expect Coley to find a new home sooner than later.

LB B.J. Bello

BJ Bello came into the USFL last year midway through the season with the Philadelphia Stars. He had a few years of NFL playing time as well, but given the amount of talent featured in the Renegades linebackers room, Bello was left on the outside looking in.

LB Jordan Wright

Jordan Wright had originally been drafted by the Renegades during the 2023 XFL Rookie Draft, but did not sign with the team until early February. Wright had a solid career at Kentucky, and was a team captain during his final year there.

DB Elijah Hamilton

Elijah Hamilton is a name that I thought would have been a lock to make the regular season roster. He was a starter for the St. Louis Battlehawks last year, and was signed by the Green Bay Packers following his XFL campaign. He’ll be in high demand coming out of camp, no doubt.

DB Nasir Greer

Greer was with the Arlington Renegades last year, but was on the injured reserve list throughout the entire season. After being re-claimed during the Dispersal Draft, Greer now becomes a free agent once again.

FS Christian Morgan

Christian Morgan was an offseason addition for Arlington through the dispersal draft process. He originally had signed a LOI with the Houston Roughnecks. Morgan played his college football at Baylor, and generated NFL interest from the Packers coming out of college.

Final Thoughts

Just like every other UFL team, GM Rick Mueller and HC Bob Stoops had some tough decisions to make regarding the future of their franchise. With an XFL title to defend, the Renegades are sticking with a lot of familiar pieces on their roster.

The next batch of cutdowns is slated for March 23rd, which will finalize every roster at 50 for the regular season.
