AJ McCarron Sets XFL Passing Record In St. Louis Battlehawks Win

AJ McCarron Sets XFL Records In St. Louis Battlehawks Win

AJ McCarron has just officially solidified himself as an XFL legend. The St. Louis Battlehawks quarterback posted one of the greatest stat-lines in all of spring football history, absolutely willing his team to a crucial week ten victory.

This isn’t anything new. McCarron has been balling out all season long in the XFL, and is certainly in the running for MVP. Without his leadership, the St. Louis Battlehawks would not have a 7-3 record.

However, today’s game was on a whole other level. This was, by far, one of the greatest performances in alt-football ever. The Battlehawks posted 53 points, which is an XFL record.

Remarkable XFL Performance

From the very first snap, AJ McCarron was in control. His mission was clear: score as many points as humanly possible.

He was slinging it like his life was on the line. It was, as St. Louis could not afford to lose this game – otherwise it would end their postseason aspirations.

Thankfully, AJ McCarron decided to have the game of his life:

28/35 (80%)
420 yards
6 TD
0 turnovers
156.2 QB Rating

With how talented this Battlehawks unit is, McCarron had plenty of help. The entire offense was in sync. Between Darrius Shepherd, Hakeem Butler, Steven Mitchell, etc. – Orlando had absolutely no answers for St. Louis’ air attack.

McCarron showcased the entire skill set today. He was tossing dimes deep, making the right reads underneath, and zipping darts through multiple defenders. This touchdown pass to Steven Mitchell was a thing of beauty, dropping it into the bread basket.

His ability to throw passes where only his receivers can get them is uncanny. McCarron was doing this all day long, including this throw to Darrius Shepherd – who made an amazing one handed catch.

His final touchdown pass went to Steven Mitchell, on a 16 yard dime to the back of the endzone. If this is his last score of the 2023 XFL season, it was a perfect way to cap off a historic performance.

XFL Records

AJ McCarron is the first quarterback in XFL history to throw for more than 20 touchdowns in a full season.

On top of that, his 420 yards and six touchdowns are the most we’ve ever seen from an XFL quarterback. Ben DiNucci, QB for the Seattle Sea Dragons, threw for 378 earlier in the XFL season. But, AJ took the crown today. Through all three iterations of this league, no one’s done it quite like McCarron did today.

Perfect Timing

This type of performance was exactly what St. Louis needed. Despite their 7-3 record, they haven’t clinched the playoffs quite yet. In fact, they could miss the postseason tomorrow, if Seattle wins.

However, with their XFL season on the line, AJ McCarron delivered. Whether or not they ultimately make the postseason doesn’t take away from how spectacular he was this year. Anthony Becht recruited him to St. Louis, which worked out quite well for his unit.

While the XFL MVP award is up for grabs, if St. Louis does make the postseason, McCarron has quite the case. He lit up The Dome week in and week out, and showed that he can play at a high level as a starter in professional football.

Final Thoughts

For those of us who watched today’s outing between the St. Louis Battlehawks and Orlando Guardians, we witnessed history.

Without the XFL, moments like these wouldn’t be possible. It’s encouraging to see spring football making such a major impact in so many athlete’s careers. For AJ McCarron, this might just be the platform he needed to make it back to the NFL.
