New Jersey Generals | Week 1 Report

Why the New Jersey Generals Should Start Kyle Lauletta This Week

Last week, the quarterback shuffling in the USFL continued as the New Jersey Generals claimed former Maulers first-round draft pick Kyle Lauletta.

The move adds depth after DeAndre Johnson was sidelined this past weekend with an ankle injury he suffered against Houston. Despite his absence, it was business as usual for as they held off a late comeback from the Bandits to earn a ticket to the playoffs.

Now, the Generals are in a interesting position with three games to play, and essentially nothing left to play for. With no homefield advantage to play for as the playoffs are in Canton, the main goal for the Generals is to enter the postseason healthy.

While Kyle Lauletta may have struggled at times, he is far from the worst quarterback the league has seen so far. On the year, Lauletta has completed 31 of his 63 passes for 269 yards without a touchdown or an interception to his name.

Interestingly enough, Lauletta got most of his playing time against the Generals in Week 4, completing 15 of his 32 passes for 169 yards. Lauletta kept the Maulers in the game as they only lost 21-13 to the North’s best team.

Lauletta’s lack of interceptions shows he may be the right quarterback to share snaps with Luis Perez. With Perez being the pocket-passing half of the Generals’ quarterback duo, mistake-free football has been the General trademark this year as Perez has only thrown one interception in 115 passes. Johnson has only one interception himself in 57 passes.

Additionally, it may be a competitive advantage to have Lauletta start for Generals on Friday night. He knows the Maulers better than anyone on the Generals and will likely notice tendencies that Perez will not.

The USFL Playoffs are around the corner, now is the time for the Generals to experiment and build depth for the post-season. Lauletta’s addition is a win for both him and the Generals. New Jersey would be unwise to keep Lauletta on the sidelines Friday night.
