What Bo Scarbrough’s Signing Means For The Undefeated Birmingham Stallions

The Birmingham Stallions are on a roll, beginning the USFL season with a 4-0 record. They are the final undefeated team, and currently sit atop the South Division. This week, the Stallions brought in another offensive weapon, signing Bo Scarbrough.

Scarbrough now joins CJ Marable and Tony Brooks-James in Birmingham’s backfield, adding some size to that group.

With Bo now on the team, Birmingham’s already electrifying offense just became even scarier. Let’s take a look at the impact this signing has on the Stallions, and the league as a whole.

Alabama Career

Fans of the Stallions should be very familiar with Bo, since he played at Alabama for a couple of years. During his tenure, Scarbrough was exceptional, rushing for over 1,400 yards through his junior and senior years.

His pure athleticism, paired with a unique combination of speed and strength, makes Scarbrough into a force to be reckoned with on the field. Some have made comparisons to Derrick Henry, as his movements draw similarities to the NFL star.

Despite dealing with some injuries and setbacks, Scarbrough had an excellent career at Alabama, setting himself up for a professional career in football.

NFL Ups And Downs

In 2019, he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round – but was eventually let go. Bo then joined the Detroit Lions, spending the full season there. While he did not see a ton of action, Scarbrough ran for almost 400 yards, averaging 4.2YPC.

An unproductive year in Seattle left Scarbrough with very little to show for in the NFL, not seeing any action since 2020.

What Bo Brings To Birmingham

Bo can absolutely be a valuable asset to Skip Holtz’ offensive squad. Between Marable and Brooks-James, the team does not have a bigger, more physical back.

Adding Scarbrough means that Birmingham will have the ability to punish defenses on the ground. Scarbrough runs hard, and can wear down opposing defenses. Putting him next to a smaller back like Marable will likely result in a solid one-two punch for Holtz’ offense.

On top of that, Bo will make J’Mar Smith’s life quite a bit easier. One of Birmingham’s struggles has been to consistently run the football. Adding Scarbrough means that Birmingham should run the ball more efficiently, which in turn creates more opportunities for Smith through the air – and on the ground.

It will be interesting to see how Holtz uses Scarbrough. He should be the type of back who can dominate up front, eventually finding his way into the secondary. Also, he’s exactly the guy you want to have in the backfield on third and short situations.

Take for example this play from week four, where Tampa Bay gets a goal-line stand. Ideally in this situation, Alex McGough would have been able to hand the ball off to someone like Scarbrough, instead of trying to do too much on his end.

Having Bo in the backfield will no doubt improve Birmingham’s offense – and should elevate them to new heights.

Final Thoughts

Considering the Stallions are already 4-0, this addition to the lineup is almost unfair. With Scarbrough on the team, Birmingham now boasts a complete offense across the board.

While it may take some time for Bo to get adjusted to Skip Holtz’ schemes, and get accustomed to playing football again, expect to see him on the field in week five.

It only makes sense for the Alabama star to find himself back in the state to pursue his professional career – and we can’t wait to see what he accomplishes in the USFL.
