The TV Ratings for the UFL from week three are in, and it’s once again a mixed bag of some good, and some bad.
Birmingham vs. Arlington (FOX): 682,000
Memphis vs. Houston (ESPN): 295,000
Michigan vs. San Antonio (ABC): 719,000
St. Louis vs. DC (ABC): 967,000
Starting off with Friday night, it appears that we’re seeing a stable audience of around 600-700k for the new window on FOX. It’s not an incredible number, but it’s at least remained steady. Birmingham vs. Arlington was an absolute slugfest, and wasn’t a game that would’ve had fans on the edge of their seat. FOX would like to see this statistic increase as the season progresses, but with it being an experimental time slot, it’s hard to see it improving too drastically moving forward.
The worrying note here is Memphis vs. Houston, which averaged just 295,000 viewers on ESPN. ESPN’s TV ratings for the UFL have been down as a whole so far this year, with this being the lowest number yet. There wasn’t a ton of competition, either. Clearly, it seems that Memphis and Houston aren’t teams that catch the public’s eye or interest very much.
On Sunday, we saw some positives. First up, the Michigan Panthers vs. San Antonio Brahmas showdown on ABC averaged 719,000 in audience. It was a down to the wire thriller, with Michigan coming out on top. While this number is down a bit from ABC’s average last year – there was stiff competition with the NBA, and the Masters.
St. Louis vs. DC is where the money was made. This matchup averaged 967,000 – peaking at 1.4M viewers on the day. Despite nearly 13 million tuning into the Masters on CBS, ABC’s outings showed promise, and signs of growth for the league as a whole. There’s plenty of room for improvement, but it is a step in the right direction.
Hopefully, we’ll continue to see these numbers trend upwards. Week four will feature all four matchups on broadcast television (FOX, ABC) – which is great news.
