The UFL had an incredibly entertaining weekend of football, but the TV Ratings show that due to some stiff competition, a decrease in overall viewership. Via Mike Mitchell, the ratings are as follows:
Birmingham vs. Memphis (FOX): 467,000
St. Louis vs. Michigan (ESPN): 615,000
Arlington vs. DC (ESPN): 545,000
San Antonio vs. Houston (ESPN): 391,000
The only game on broadcast television was on Friday night, with Memphis and Birmingham averaging just 467,000 for what was an overtime thriller. The game did have heavy competition, with the NFL draft going on at the same time, and the NBA playoffs as well.
The rest of the week featured three games on ESPN, which is technically cable TV – despite being such a well known network.
St. Louis vs. Michigan performed the best in a primetime slot on Saturday night, averaging 615,000 viewers – which was the most for any ESPN game this year. The NFL draft concluded on ESPN and led right into the game, though, so it’s unfortunate that we didn’t see more of a carryover from that event.
The other two, on Sunday, though, saw a dip. San Antonio vs. Houston, in particular, had a tough time as it was directly competing with game four of the NBA’s premier matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves.
With three of the four games on cable this weekend, it was tough to expect tremendous ratings – especially with the NFL Draft, NHL Playoffs, and NBA playoffs all going on at the same time. UFL executives understand that it’s going to take time to see those ratings increase, but hopefully the backend of the year with some tough competition will boost those numbers.
That said, it’s a shame that one of the best weekends of UFL football this weekend had some of the lowest numbers of the season.
