UFL 2025 Championship Sees Dropoff In TV Ratings & Viewership

The UFL’s 2025 Championship is in the books, with the DC Defenders taking down the Michigan Panthers on Saturday night, 58-34. It was an exciting affair for the league’s second championship game, which was aired on ABC.

Unfortunately, though, the TV Ratings did not live up to the hype of the game itself. According to Mike Mitchell, the UFL’s 2025 Championship averaged just 983,000 viewers.

This is by far the lowest rating for any of the Championship games over the past few years. The previous lowest number was the USFL’s 2023 Championship on NBC, which averaged 1.2M.

ABC has only had one Championship game prior, with the XFL’s 2023 outing averaging 1.436M viewers for Arlington vs. DC that year.

It is rather disappointing to see the UFL feature just 983,000 in viewership – especially on a channel such as ABC, which has been one of their strongest networks this season. ABC carried the TV ratings throughout most of the year. Not to mention, the game wasn’t up against the NBA Finals, which has been their biggest competition. They did compete with the MLB and the Stanley Cup, with overlapping games during that time frame.

On top of the lower rating – attendance in St. Louis was much lower this time around compared to a season ago. In 2024, the league reported over 27,000 tickets distributed for the Championship. This time around, it was just over 14,000 – and that difference was clearly visible on TV.

As the UFL heads into this offseason, there will be plenty of questions that need answers. TV ratings and attendance – two of the key tenants to this league and its potential success – both trended downwards in 2025. This was capped off by a Championship game that featured an uptick in scoring, yet saw viewership down by 38.4%, and attendance nearly severed in half.

For the league front office and executives, tough decisions will have to be made in moving forward with a product that can prove that it will be sustainable, and attract more investors in the near future.

  1. Slow expansion and maybe moving Memphis back to Tampa?
thought ratings and attendance were down, I think the UFL has leveled off to where they can expect to be for the time being . . . so build slowly from there.
I think UFL has to get to 12-16 teams in the next 3-5 years to be sustainable for the NFL / CFL

  2. These were two big TV mkts. Granted they are in markets with NFL playoff teams. But while I saw alot of press coverage in Detroit and some media coverage, I saw nothing in Wash DC.
The league can’t afford having large markets underperform. Curious to see how DC and Mich did.

The game was over by the half and Mich defense was way disappointing to watch, it was a beat down by DC over Wash. Clearly being on Saturday night vs Father’s Day Sunday night (2024) also had an impact. The NHL finals and MLB on Fox didn’t help at all, but still need to get 1.4+ here.

Don’t forget the Army parade Saturday that likely had alot of FB fans. There were the protests too, lots of distractions on that Sat. No excuses but things not falling UFL way in 2025

Major disappointment, did not see that coming. Having said that I thought the game was going to be a barn burner and come down to the wire. Lots of scoring but lopsided. And Mich looked lackluster on Def. Very poor.

The league has alot of work to do for 2026 and beyond. They need to get off their asses. I’m sure you’ll have articles and podcasts post season to get into that more.

  3. I know the UFL wants to position itself as a developmental league for the NFL. But please stop talking about it during the games. Most UFL fans are aware that these players have bigger ambitions than playing in the UFL. The game commentators have done a better job with analysis but please lessen the plugs into the NFL.

  4. In my opinion, if this wants to have a chance to survive or even thrive, they should rethink the timing of the season. There are just too many things to compete with in this timeframe, basketball and hockey playoffs just to name a couple. I believe a better time to have the season would be actually starting Now in mid June and finish up right around when the NFL preseason is getting started. Yes it is hotter weather to play in. But it makes a lot more sense. There isn’t a whole lot going on except for the occasional big golf tournament and Wimbledon tennis. And the middle of the ever-ending MLB season. But that’s about it. There would be the least amount of competition. It’s the period of time where there is a void & people are looking for something else to watch. It would make a lot more sense because running the season when they currently do, this is not going to last much longer.
