TSU Bobcats in the USFL: Liam Dobson

Up next in a United States Football League (USFL) profile snapshot is Texas State’s Liam Dobson.

Dobson, a 6-3, 331-pound guard out of Ottawa, Canada, was selected by the New Orleans Breakers in the 23rd round of the 2022 USFL Draft.

However, he was released following week six of the regular season and recently signed a contract to play in the Canadian Football League (CFL); more on that later.

Prior to his time with the Texas State University (TSU) Bobcats, Dobson spent four years and three seasons playing for the University of Maine Black Bears; he was voted Maine’s Outstanding Lineman after starting all 12 games and averaging 12 knockdowns per game in 2019.

Dobson was the third overall pick in the 2021 CFL Draft, but at that time he chose to return to school for a final season at Texas State.

As a graduate student at Texas State, Dobson started all 12 games at guard and was also a Pro Football Focus (PFF) All-Sun Belt Honorable Mention and made the 2022 Dean’s List (3.5 GPA or higher in a semester).

Bringing us to the 2022 USFL season, where although Dobson was drafted before the inaugural year kicked off, he never suited up for New Orleans and was officially released on May 24, 2022.

Regardless of being released, Dobson’s drop from the Breakers roster had absolutely nothing to do with the guard’s on-the-field talent. Instead, much of it had to do with Dobson securing a foreign work visa.

He was pursuing options at NFL mini-camps with the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints after being released by the USFL but recently made his decision on where to continue his playing career.

Dobson inked a two-year contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the team who originally drafted him in the 2021 CFL Draft, in late May.

Fun facts: Dobson was a varsity starter as a freshman at Canada Prep Academy and was teammates in high school with former Bobcat Samuel Obiang; he also started for U19 Team Canada.
