After a few years away from the alternative football space, Brian Woods has returned with “The Pro Showcase”. It’s a spinoff of what The Spring League used to be, prior to its buyout from FOX Sports, which eventually morphed into the United States Football League (USFL).
Last week, The Pro Showcase officially held their first event, in Miami. It featured nearly 100 professional athletes, who participated in a few practices – and then an “unofficial scrimmage” on Thursday.
Brian Woods has always had his hands in the developmental side of alternative football. Now that his no-compete clause is complete with FOX Sports and the USFL, he’s re-entered the scene as there is a “critical void in development for pro football”.
The Pro Showcase is modeled similarly to what the TSL was, before it turned into an official league, with games broadcasted on FOX. According to The Pro Showcase’s website, this event exists for potential football prospects to:
- Receive valuable “live” practice and game repetitions in a real football context
- Get current practice and game film
- Receive instruction from a staff comprised entirely of former NFL coaches
- Be evaluated by player personnel departments from the NFL, CFL, & alternative football leagues
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, TPS held practices with their athletes. Then, Thursday was “game day”, where players were broken up into groups to run official drills. While it wasn’t exactly a game, per se, the scrimmage allowed for players to put get current film, flashing their talent for the NFL scouts in attendance. The Pro Showcase will also be sending practice and scrimmage film to various professional leagues (i.e. NFL, CFL, UFL).
A full list of TPS participants isn’t available to the public. That said, there were some legitimate standouts at the event who the league posted on social media, such as:
- DT Isaiah Coe, Oklahoma (Battlehawks Draft Pick)
- WR Mike Harley Jr., Miami (Exp. w/ Browns)
- RB Trey Sanders, TCU
- RB Rah’Jai Harris, ECU
- LB Matthew Adams, Houston (7-year NFL veteran)
- TE Daniel Barker, Illinois & MSU (Exp. w/ Dolphins)
- LB Mason Cobb, OSU & USC
- DT Leonard Payne Jr., Colorado (Exp. w/ Dolphins)
- LB Jaylan Alexander, Purdue (Exp. w/ Bears)
- TE Luke Ford, Illinois (Brahmas Signee)
- DB Jeremy Lucien, Vanderbilt & UCONN (Exp. w/ Ravens)
With the amount of NFL-caliber talent that was at The Pro Showcase, expect some of these players to land in the spring football space sooner than later. RB Marquez Cooper (San Diego State) has already signed with the CFL’s Ottawa Redblacks, following the event.
Following a successful first showcase in Miami, TPS will now shift focus to hosting similar events in the near future. To learn more about The Pro Showcase, visit www.theproshowcase.com.
