Texas Longhorns in the USFL: Jeff McCulloch

The Texas Longhorns added yet another name to their growing list of players currently in the United States Football League (USFL) with the free agent signing of linebacker Jeff McCulloch.

McCulloch, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound defensive end out of Houston, Texas, signed with the Tampa Bay Bandits on May 25, 2022, after going undrafted in the USFL Draft.

As a freshman for the Longhorns in 2016, McCulloch played in all 12 games on both defense and special teams, concluding the season with 23 tackles (17 solo), one sack, one quarterback hurry, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

In 2017, as a sophomore at Texas, McCulloch appeared in 10 games (played in first nine games before a late-season injury; he returned for the team’s bowl game) and ended the year with 10 tackles (six solo), two QB hurries and 1.5 sacks.

In McCulloch’s junior campaign for the Horns in 2018, he played in 14 games (starting six) and garnered 33 tackles (16 solo), three pass deflections, one QB hurry, one sack, one forced fumble and one interception (which he returned 65 yards).

As a senior in 2019, McCulloch played in 10 games (four starts; missed two games due to injury) and totaled 28 tackles (21 solo) and a half-sack; he graduated with a degree in sports management.

Bringing us to the 2022 USFL season for the Stars, where thus far McCulloch has yet to see any action as he was transferred to the team’s inactive roster on May 27, 2022.

Fun facts: McCulloch went to Davis High School (Texas) and was named All-District 18-6A; he was also honored as one of the best three linebackers in the State of Texas, honorable mention Super Team and “2016 Texas’ Best” by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

In addition, he was a three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (spring 2017, spring 2018, spring 2019) while a student at UT and was named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.
