Texas Longhorns in the USFL: Darion Dunn

The Texas Longhorns bolstered their list of former players in the United States Football League (USFL) with the announcement of expanded rosters heading into week six of the season.

Darion Dunn, a 24-year-old cornerback who began his collegiate career at McNeese State prior to his lone season with the Horns, signed with the New Jersey Generals as an undrafted free agent on May 19, 2022.

In his one and only year with the Longhorns in 2021, the 6-foot-1, 192-pound defensive back played in all 12 games (one start) and garnered 22 tackles (16 solo), two pass breakups and one forced fumble.

Dunn, who is from Oakdale, Louisiana, spent his first four years (2016-2019) at McNeese State and appeared in 29 games for the Cowboys (23 starts) with 83 tackles (70 solo), 27 pass deflections, seven interceptions, one forced fumble and one sack. He transferred to Texas in Aug. 2020.

After getting looked at by NFL teams at Pro Day in Austin in 2021 and again at a rookie minicamp tryout with the New York Jets the first week of May 2022, Dunn inked with the Generals just a couple weeks after those tryouts.

Thus far for the Generals, Dunn has yet to see any action and was transferred to the team’s inactive roster on May 20, 2022.

Fun facts: As a junior for the McNeese State Cowboys in 2019, Dunn had two interceptions in a game TWICE that season (against Alcorn and Northwestern State). He was also on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a student at Texas in the spring of 2021.

Due up next in a series of USFL profile snapshots: a closer look at the former players from Texas Tech currently playing in the league.
