Texas A&M Aggies in the USFL: Avery Gennesy

Beginning this week, we will be taking an in-depth look at the former Texas A&M Aggies who are currently playing in the United States Football League (USFL).

Leading things off for the Aggies is 28-year-old Avery Gennesy, a 6-foot-4, 321-pound tackle who was selected by the Houston Gamblers in the 6th round of the 2022 USFL Draft.

Gennesy began his college career at East Mississippi Community College (2012-2013) and helped lead the Lions to a perfect 12-0 record en route to the 2013 National Junior College Championship before transferring to Texas A&M and redshirting in 2014.

In 2015, as a junior with the Aggies, Gennesy started every game at left tackle and was named to the 2015 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll — helping to solidify a potent offense that averaged 424.7 yards per game. He also started in all 13 games for Texas A&M as a senior in 2016.

After being waived by the Jackson Jaguars (May 2018) and cut by the Cleveland Browns (Sept. 2018), Gennesy was added to the Denver Broncos practice squad (Sept. 2018) before briefly garnering a spot on an NFL roster with the Tennessee Titans in April 2020.

Following stints with the Atlanta Legends in the Alliance of American Football (AAF) league (started eight games) and the Houston Roughnecks in the 2020 version of the XFL (started five games before the league folded due to the coronavirus pandemic), the former Aggie is now helping to lead the charge as a starting tackle for the Gamblers in the USFL.

Thus far in 2022, Gennesy has played in and started four games for Houston.

Fun fact: After spending his college days at Texas A&M in College Station, Gennesy has now spent the past two professional football seasons representing the state of Texas by playing for Houston, a city just about an hour away from his college campus, in both the XFL (2020) and USFL (2022).

Up next for Gennesy and the Houston Gamblers (1-4, 4th place in South): a battle against the New Jersey Generals (4-1, 1st place in North) on Sunday, May 22 at 3 pm Central Time on FOX.
