Up next for the Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs in the United States Football League (USFL) is a guy who has made quite a splash this season and a name many spring football fans hear time and time again: KaVontae Turpin.
Turpin, a 25-year-old, highly-touted wide receiver out of Monroe, Louisiana, was selected by the New Jersey Generals in the 13th round of the 2022 USFL Draft.
Standing 5-foot-9 and 155-pounds, the star receiver has amassed numerous accolades since being introduced into the league this inaugural season.
We’ll discuss that in more detail shorty, but first: his college stats.
As a freshman for the Horned Frogs in 2015, Turpin played in all 13 games for TCU (starting five) and racked up 649 receiving yards on 45 catches with eight touchdowns, 116 rushing yards on 20 carries, 729 yards on 27 kick returns, and 181 yards on 17 punt returns with one touchdown for a grand total of 1,675 all purpose yards (averaging 128.8 yards per game).
In his sophomore year at TCU, Turpin battled through an injury-plagued season but still managed to appear in eight games (starting two) and garnered 295 receiving yards on 30 receptions with one TD, 84 rushing yards on nine carries, 482 yards on 17 kick returns, and 125 yards on 10 punt returns with one TD; totaling 986 all purpose yards (average of 123.3 yards per game).
Turpin truly shined in his junior year with the Horned Frogs in 2017, playing in all 14 games (starting three) and concluding the season with 394 receiving yards on 41 catches with one touchdown, 86 rushing yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns, 462 yards on 15 kick returns with one TD, and 260 yards on 16 punt returns with one TD, amassing a total of 1,202 all purpose yards (averaging 85.9 yards per game).
In 2018, Turpin played in just seven games for TCU yet still finished his senior campaign with 410 receiving yards on 29 catches with three touchdowns, 442 rushing yards on 33 carries, 312 yards on 12 kick returns with one TD, and 175 yards on nine punt returns with one TD, totaling a massive 1,339 all purpose yards while averaging an astonishing 191.3 yards per game.
The TCU receiver also spent some time with the Wroclaw Panthers in the European League of Football (EFL) in 2021 prior to being drafted this season in the USFL.
Bringing us to 2022, where this guy just continues to shine — as the stud wide receiver currently has 361 receiving yards on 31 receptions with three touchdowns, 120 rushing yards with one TD, 68 kick-return yards, and 104 punt-return yards for a total of 653 all purpose yards and four touchdowns for the Generals.
Fun facts: Turpin was a three-star recruit and the No. 12 overall prospect in Louisiana by Scout.com as a high school student and was also All-State and First-Team All-Northeast Louisiana as a senior in 2014; he also chose TCU over Texas Tech.
In addition, he received numerous awards every single year in his college career with the Horned Frogs (highlighted by True Freshman All-American honors for all-purpose yards by 247Sports.com in 2015, Honorable-Mention Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year in 2016, First-Team AP All-Big 12 for all-purpose yards in 2017, and multiple Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors in 2018).
