From Undrafted to Untouchable: Michigan Panthers Cole Murphy Proving He Has What It Takes

TCU Horned Frogs in the USFL: Cordel Iwuagwu

Continuing on with the Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs currently playing in the United States Football League (USFL), we move on to 25-year-old Cordel Iwuagwu.

Iwuagwu, a 6-foot-3, 309-pound offensive lineman hailing from Houston, Texas, was selected by the Michigan Panthers in the 22nd round of the 2022 USFL Draft.

As a redshirt freshman for TCU in 2016, Iwuagwu played in eight games (starting two) prior to missing the final four games of the season; as a sophomore in 2017, he started all 14 games for the Horned Frogs at left guard.

In his junior year with TCU, Iwuagwu dealt with a mid-season injury that sidelined him for eight games after starting the first four contests at left guard; he returned to action in the team’s final game of 2018 — a Cheez-It Bowl victory over Cal.

As a senior, the left guard started all 12 games for the Horned Frogs and was named a team captain for 10 games (including the last nine of the season). He was also a 2019 Honorable-Mention All-Big 12 honoree.

Following an extremely successful collegiate career at TCU, Iwuagwu participated in the 2020 East-West Shrine Bowl and also attended the 2020 NFL Combine.

After going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, the star guard signed a free agent contract with the Houston Texans on April 27, 2020 (he was waived during the team’s final roster cuts on Sept. 5 and was signed to the Texans practice squad two days later).

He joined the Cleveland Browns practice squad in December 2020 after being released by the Texans, later signing a reserve/futures contract with the team in Jan. 2021 prior to being waived on Aug. 16, 2021.

Bringing us to the 2022 USFL season, where thus far for the Panthers, Iwuagwu has played in six games (starting two).

Fun facts: Iwuagwu was a three-star recruit by Scout.com (also rated the No. 7 offensive guard in the State of Texas) and was a first-team District 15-6A selection while a student at Westfield High School. He also chose TCU over Arizona State, Illinois, Louisville and Syracuse.

Due up next for Iwuagwu and the Michigan Panthers (1-6, 3rd place in South): a showdown against the Philadelphia Stars (4-3, 2nd place in North) on Sunday, June 5 at 11 am Central Time on FOX.
