Potential Offensive Coordinator Targets For St. Louis Battlehawks

The St. Louis Battlehawks are going to need a new Offensive Coordinator in 2026. Yesterday, news broke that Phil McGeoghan accepted a Head Coaching job with the Berlin Thunder. This has left a vacancy on Anthony Becht’s staff heading towards next UFL season.

For those wondering if Phil could do both gigs – the ELF’s seasons have typically kicked off while the UFL is still playing. Even though the newly formed European Football Alliance is a “new league”, they’re likely looking at the same timeline.

With this in mind, Becht will need a new OC in 2026. Let’s take a look at a few names that could potentially come into play for St. Louis.

Internal Hires

Kyle Caskey: Kyle Caskey has spent the last two years on this St. Louis staff, coaching the running backs and also serving as Special Teams Coordinator. He’s got plenty of experience working within Becht’s system. Not to mention, Jacob Saylors has earned All-UFL honors twice under his leadership.

Caskey has some NFL experience on his resume as well. He was an Offensive Quality Control Coach, and Running Backs Coach for the Cincinnati Bengals, while also spending a bit of time with the Lions and Jaguars. Caskey hasn’t called plays yet as a true OC, but he’s got the tangibles needed for a promotion, and understands the players on this roster better than just about anybody.

Seneca Wallace: Wallace was a new addition to Becht’s staff this year, joining as Quarterbacks Coach. Wallace played in the NFL for several years as a quarterback, and also was an assistant for the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. Seneca doesn’t have a ton of true coaching experience outside of his time in St. Louis, but is a name worth mentioning given his relationship with Coach Becht.

Former Spring Football Faces

Spring football is its own animal, something that Coach Becht knows well. He may be better off hiring someone who’s already knowledgable within this space, rather than introducing a new name to the UFL. If Anthony wants to bring a name into the fold who’s already familiar with the scene, there are a few notable coaches available.

A.J. Smith

A.J. Smith doesn’t need much of an introduction. He’s been one of the faces of the XFL/UFL as a young, upcoming coach in the scene. Smith helped lead the Houston Roughnecks to a 7-3 record in 2023, boasting one of the top offenses in the XFL that year.

In 2024, Smith jumped over to the San Antonio Brahmas with Head Coach Wade Phillips. The Brahmas proceeded to make a Championship run, despite injuries to a multitude of starters on both sides of the ball.

2025 told a different story. Miscommunication behind the scenes, plus some strange circumstances led to A.J. Smith stepping down from his position with San Antonio, just two weeks into the season.

With that in mind, there’s no doubt that Smith has a history of winning in this space. A.J. is also very fond of QB Brandon Silvers, who’s been rostered in St. Louis the last two years. Considering the Battlehawks’ need for some stability offensively, it would be worth Anthony Becht’s time to give Smith a call.

Eric Marty

Eric Marty is another younger prospect who saw success in this space, and knows what it takes to win. Marty served as the Michigan Panthers Offensive Coordinator in the USFL from 2022-2023. The team earned a playoff berth in the 2023 season.

We know St. Louis loves to run the football, and that’s something that Marty & Co. did at a high level in Michigan – with Reggie Corbin earning All-USFL honors, leading the league in rushing yards per game. Marty also coached a plethora of quarterbacks during his time in Michigan, with Josh Love earning multiple “Player of the Week” honors throughout the 2023 season.

Since his departure from Michigan, Marty has served in assistant roles at Eastern Michigan University and College of the Sequoias. Currently, he’s the Offensive Coordinator with Sequoias Football. The team is 6-1, averaging 34.2 points per game, and their quarterback Payton Faker leads the state in passing yards. Marty would bring plenty of upside to this Battlehawks organization, given his youth, work ethic, and resume.

June Jones

This one is a bit far-fetched…but is it really? June Jones was a staple of the spring scene years back, coaching the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks to a 5-0 record in 2020. He made a quick appearance in The Spring League with the Conquerors, and returned to the XFL in 2023, as the Offensive Coordinator for the Seattle Sea Dragons. Seattle led the XFL with 359.2 yards per game that year.

Everywhere he’s been, June has seen quite a bit of success with his “run and shoot” approach. He’s been in college football, the NFL, CFL, and XFL – and might still have an itch to coach at 72 years old. Jones hasn’t coached since his time with the Sea Dragons.

Doug Martin

Finally, Doug Martin is another veteran coach who spent a couple of years in the USFL and UFL. He was the New Orleans Breakers OC in 2023, under John DeFilippo. The Breakers made a playoff run that year with a 7-3 record, averaging the second most yards in the league (315.2 yards/game). New Orleans led the USFL with 225.8 passing yards/game in 2023.

Martin made the jump to the UFL with DeFilippo, taking over the Memphis Showboats. The Showboats were dead last in the league with just 230.8 yards per game. However, some of this can be attributed to the turnover/injuries at quarterback, alongside the personnel issues across the board. Memphis’ offensive line was a terrible unit under Jim Turner, allowing a league-high 38 sacks in 2024.

Doug is currently coaching at Elon, serving as the team’s Offensive Coordinator and QB’s Coach. Elon has a 4-4 record this season.

Final Thoughts

Anthony Becht likely has a long list of prospects already in mind. Given his NFL background, and the connections he has across the board, there’s a plethora of names he has access to at many different levels.

Also, this piece focused solely on prospects already on his staff, or who have experience in the scene. Looking at Becht’s track record, he could choose to bring in another “Seneca Wallace”, giving a lesser-experienced coach – with a strong NFL background as a player – an opportunity to prove themselves.

The good news for Becht is that he has much more of a runway this time around. Becht lost Bruce Gradkowski in early February, giving him less than a month to find a replacement. With Phil leaving in October, it allows for more time to go into the decision-making process.
