A couple of weeks ago, Lucas Havrisik burst onto the scene in the NFL. The former Dallas Renegades kicker took an emergency gig with the Green Bay Packers, and exceeded all expectations across two weeks. With an injury to Brandon McManus, Havrisik filled in for two games.
What we witnessed was nothing short of incredible. Lucas came in basically off the street, preparing for substitute teaching, and instead put himself in a position to keep his NFL dream alive.
Havrisik successfully hit all six of his XP attempts, while setting a franchise record with a 61 yard field goal in their win over Arizona. He connected on all four field goal tries through those two appearances, providing the Packers with stability at the position.
However, despite his emergence over the last couple of games, the Packers made a game-time decision to suit up McManus. Brandon’s been a trusty veteran specialist for Green Bay, but has battled an injury the last few weeks.
Whether he was rushed to return or not remains unclear, but it certainly seems like Brandon wasn’t ready to take the field again. In Green Bay’s win on Sunday night, McManus missed two kicks in the first half. The first, from 57 yards out, came up short. Then, he whiffed on a 44 yard field goal right before halftime, leaving points off the board in an important moment.
Now, he did make his final two FGA’s – both from within 30 yards, when the Packers held a double digit lead.
The Packers are now in an uncomfortable situation at kicker. They’ve got McManus on a three year, $15.3 million dollar contract – something you wouldn’t want to go to waste quite yet. That said, he’s missed a few kicks this year, and evidently isn’t fully healthy.
With all of this in mind, it wouldn’t hurt for Green Bay to stick with Lucas for the foreseeable future. Give McManus time to fully recover, and then they can make the decision on what the rest of the season holds. For the time being, Havrisik can handle duties against Carolina this upcoming Sunday.
Lucas Havrisik kicked for the Dallas Renegades this past UFL season. He made 22 of 25 field goal attempts, with a long of 54 yards. You can stay up to date on all UFL to NFL signings with our official tracker.
