The DC Defenders entered Saturday’s matchup with the Louisville Kings as the hottest-team in spring football as they rattled off five-straight wins prior to Week 7’s game.
Key word, prior…
First Half
After a rare slow start from the Defenders offense, the Kings looked poised to add the first points of the game after two big-chunk runs by James Robinson to place Louisville in prime position. DC’s front-seven had other ideas, as Boogie Basham finished off the Kings opening drive with a sack on Chandler Rogers before kicker Tanner Brown missed a field goal to keep the score even at 0-0.
Defenders kicker Matt McCrane then responded with a miss of his own on the ensuing drive. McCrane’s hot start to 2026 has certainly cooled in the past couple of weeks…
After a scoreless opening quarter in DC, the Kings ended the cold-streak as Rogers completed back-to-back first down passes before Tanner Brown nailed his first field-goal of the game from 48-yards away to gain the 3-0 lead for Louisville.
The Defenders finally found their offensive-groove after going down early, as Ta’amu evaded the pressure and launched a deep-ball to Javon Antonio, who hauled it in and ran the rest of the way for an 81-yard touchdown. The longest play from scrimmage this season across the UFL this season.
With the score at 6-3 following the missed two-point attempt, the Defenders quickly found themselves with possession once again and Ta’amu continued his play from the previous drive as he went 5/6 for 68 yards and a touchdown pass to Ty Scott to extend the DC lead over Louisville, 13-3.
The Kings did not go away lightly in the first half, which ended up being a critical point in the game.
A major turning point of the game happened on this drive as Rogers scrambled to the right and was met by a bone-crushing hit by Derick Roberson. The hit was flagged for unnecessary roughness after a lengthy wait.
Following the hit and penalty, Rogers led the offense down the field quickly and found Tarik Black on a nine-yard touchdown to make it a one-possession game again at 13-10.
With minimal time left in the first half, Ta’amu hit Cornell Powell for a 54-yard pass and catch, but Louisville’s pressure caused the clock to wind down to zero and continue the three-point deficit heading into halftime.
Second Half
The second half of this game was almost a completely different matchup…
Louisville started with possession and trotted down the field to set up Brown for another 49-yard field goal, which he drilled to tie the game at 13-13.
The Kings momentum steadily continued as they punched the ball out on the ensuing kickoff, giving Louisville another early-possession in the second half. Two big runs gashed the Defenders defense before they gave up another touchdown to Tarik Black to regain the lead over DC, 20-13.
As previously stated, the second half was simply not the same Defenders team we’ve seen in the last month…
The offense was ultimately unable to gain anything substantial throughout the third quarter and into the fourth. Ta’amu threw a costly interception to Kings safety Keaton Ellis as the final quarter was just getting underway.
Louisville once again took advantage of the DC turnover with a touchdown from James Robinson at the goal line.
With a commanding 27-13 lead over the defending champs, Louisville’s defense continued to be relentless as Cam Dantzler intercepted Ta’amu for the second interception of the second half for the visiting side.
After another Tanner Brown field goal for the Kings, DC committed yet another late turnover as Cornell Powell coughed it up and Corey Mayfield recovered it.
Louisville added another field goal late to make it 30-13 and closed out the game by not allowing a single-point in the second half against one of the hottest offenses in the UFL.
Final Thoughts
The story of this game was the overwhelmingly instant-turnaround by the Kings after Chandler Rogers took the brutal hit from Roberson late in the first half. The game was completely different after that moment.
