Houston Gamblers Shock the Battlehawks at the Dome

UFL week 3 continues with the Houston Gamblers traveling to St. Louis to take on the Battlehawks. If the Battlehawks win today, they secure a spot in the postseason. Houston has been struggling to find momentum this year, but if they want a chance to see the playoffs this is as close to a must win as it gets.

With uncertainty surrounding Houston’s starting quarterback heading into kickoff, Hunter Dekkers was given the reins. Fortunately for coach Sumlin, the decision was quickly justified.

The Battlehawks grabbed early momentum. Houston opened with a three-and-out, and Sean Fesch swung field position dramatically with a 50-yard punt return that set the Battlehawks up deep in the red zone.

But Houston’s defense held firm. Despite the short field, St. Louis managed only three points, as Ramiz Ahmed drilled a 32-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.

Dekkers responded with precision. He completed all six passes on the ensuing drive for 58 yards, finishing it with a four-yard touchdown toss to Jontre Kirklin. After last week’s red zone struggles, it was exactly the kind of answer Houston needed.

Then came the play that changed the tone.

Kary Vincent Jr. read Luis Perez perfectly along the sideline, jumped the route, and returned the interception 34 yards for a touchdown. In a flash, Houston surged ahead 14-3 in the opening quarter.

St. Louis answered with a long, methodical 13-play drive, but once again stalled in scoring territory. Ahmed connected from 44 yards, cutting the deficit to 14-6.

Before halftime, Houston struck again. Dekkers pushed the ball downfield with four completions of 10+ yards, including a 35-yard touchdown strike to Lawrence Keys that gave the Gamblers a commanding 20-6 lead inside the Battledome.

Dekkers’ only blemish came late in the half. With under a minute to play, Taylor Hawkins intercepted him and handed St. Louis prime field position. Still, the Battlehawks couldn’t capitalize, settling for yet another field goal.

The first-half numbers told the story: St. Louis went 1-for-6 on third down, 0-for-3 in the red zone, committed eight penalties, and managed just 123 total yards. It was also the largest halftime deficit the Battlehawks had ever faced at home.

That frustration carried into the second half. Perez connected with Steven McBride for 29 yards to move deep into Houston territory, but the drive stalled again. He missed an open receiver in the end zone, and Ahmed later pushed a 29-yard field goal wide.

Houston, meanwhile, stayed efficient. Kirk Merritt broke off a 17-yard run and JaVonta Payton added a 10-yard catch to set up scoring range. This time, the drive ended with a 37-yard field goal from John Hoyland, extending the lead to 23-9.

Perez’s struggles continued late in the third quarter when Major Burns intercepted him, marking Houston’s third takeaway of the game.

Still, St. Louis didn’t fold. Their defense forced a three-and-out, and Perez finally found rhythm. Blake Jackson ignited the drive with a 29-yard catch-and-run, and Jahcour Pearson added a 12-yard reception to push into the red zone.

Perez then found Tyler Neville for a touchdown, pulling the Battlehawks back within one possession and reigniting the fans in the Dome.

Momentum fully shifted. Pita Taumoepenu energized the Battledome with his second sack of the day, helping force Houston into its third straight three-and-out.

After a failed fourth-down attempt, the Battlehawks’ defense came through again, giving Perez one final chance with two minutes remaining.

Perez attacked immediately. He hit McBride for 33 yards and Pearson for another 33, quickly moving St. Louis inside the Houston 35.

A costly holding penalty pushed them back into 4th-and-19. Perez was initially sacked on fourth down, but a defensive holding penalty kept the drive alive.

With 13 seconds left, Perez completed a pass to McBride, who was brought down at the two-yard line as time expired.

Houston held on, securing one of the biggest upsets of the UFL season and keeping its playoff hopes alive. Dekkers finished with two touchdown passes, while Ameer Speed led the defense with nine tackles, six solo stops, and a pass breakup.

For St. Louis, Taumoepenu was a force with seven tackles and two sacks, while McBride delivered another standout performance with seven catches for 104 yards.

In the end, the Battlehawks were left watching a chance to clinch a postseason berth slip away. The two teams will meet up once again next week, this time in Houston. Can the Gamblers keep their playoff hopes alive. Can the Battlehawks clinch their ticket to the postseason?
