Houston Gamblers Narrowly Defeat Columbus Aviators at Home

Kicking off the UFL action this Sunday is the Houston Gamblers and Columbus Aviators in a battle of 1-3 teams. It’s a now or never situation for both teams as we head into the halfway point of the season. The bottom half of the UFL is struggling, but it won’t take much to break into the top four.

Houston came out sharp. Quarterback Nolan Henderson, in his third start, orchestrated a 13-play, 80-yard opening drive that ate up more than seven minutes. A clutch 12-yard fourth-down catch from Justin Hall kept it alive, and Jalen White finished it off with his second rushing touchdown of the season.

The extra point conversion gave the Gamblers an early 7-0 lead over the Aviators.

Louisville couldn’t find their footing on the field, but Houston was not letting off of the gas. After forcing a quick three-and-out, Henderson led another long march—12 plays, 75 yards—capped by his own read-option touchdown to make it a two-score game. Early on, Houston was in rhythm, moving the ball effectively both through the air and on the ground.

Another solid extra point attempt now put the Gamblers up 14-0 over the Kings, but there was plenty of time left in the matchup.

Columbus answered when it needed a spark.

With a drive stalling, McClendon escaped pressure and delivered a perfect 27-yard strike to Antwane Wells Jr., then followed it with a 20-yard completion to Alize Mack. He capped the drive himself with a one-yard rushing score to put the Aviators on the board.

After Houston missed a 56-yard field goal, Columbus took advantage. Toa Taua jumpstarted the drive with a 12-yard run and later punched it in from seven yards out. A missed extra point kept it a one-point game.

Houston led 14–13 at halftime.

From there, the game tightened. Big plays disappeared, hits got heavier, and both defenses took control. Neither team scored in the third quarter.

Houston finally added to its lead early in the fourth, as John Hoyland connected on a short field goal to make it 17–13.

Columbus had its chances—but couldn’t capitalize.

A promising drive reached goal-to-go after a 17-yard catch-and-run by Taua, but Houston’s defense held firm. Roman Parodie dropped McClendon on third down, and a missed 29-yard field goal with under nine minutes remaining proved costly.

The Aviators got one last opportunity. McClendon moved them into scoring territory, but in the red zone, Eugene Asante forced a fumble that Houston recovered—the game’s only turnover and the decisive moment.

Columbus was shut out after halftime, and missed opportunities defined the loss.

Marvin Moody Jr. led Houston with 10 tackles, including a key stop on the final drive. The Gamblers finished with three sacks, six tackles for loss, and held Columbus under 250 total yards in a dominant defensive effort.

The two teams will meet again next week, this time the Aviators will have home field advantage in Columbus. This was a close game, so they may have a chance at redemption. As we head into the second half of the UFL season playoffs are now the main priority. In the case of the Gamblers, they’ll be hoping to get back to back wins to move them closer to the top half of the league.
