It’s been a tremendous few weeks for Harrison Mevis, experiencing the NFL for the first time. The former Birmingham Stallions kicker was picked up by the Los Angeles Rams, to provide depth with the struggles of Joshua Karty.
Mevis has since taken over the gig, and he’s shined. Harrison didn’t get to attempt any field goals the first two weeks of action – but was 9-for-9 on XP’s, showing Los Angeles his consistency from that range.
Following those performances, Harrison was signed to the active roster. Last night, on Sunday Night Football, Mevis put together another strong outing.
Harrison connected on all four XP attempts – and also finally kicked a field goal. Mevis knocked through to FG’s, from 40 and 52 yards out, respectively.
The response, across the board, has been very positive from this Los Angeles Rams fanbase. The Rams are a Super Bowl contender, but one of their shortcomings did include special teams. With Mevis now on board, and playing at a high level – those concerns can be put to bed.
Harrison Mevis has been awaiting this opportunity for quite some time. Dubbed “The Thiccer Kicker”, due to his frame, Harrison was excellent at Mizzou. He earned All-American First-Team honors, going 89-for-106 on FG’s in college.
Mevis was an UDFA addition to the Carolina Panthers, but didn’t last there long. It wasn’t until the UFL came around, that Harrison put himself back on the map. He was 20-for-21 in the United Football League, with a long of 54 yards.
Following the UFL season, Mevis was picked up by the New York Jets, but was beat out by Nick Folk. Now, Harrison Mevis has landed a legit NFL gig – one that he should be able to maintain, as long as he continues to perform like this.
Mevis is the second Stallions kicker to now be a starter in the NFL, following in the footsteps of Brandon Aubrey. Both have been coached by Chris Boniol in Birmingham, the former NFL kicker and specialist coach.
Boniol, in an interview on Around The UFL, had this to say about Mevis:
“He’s another kicker that I followed when I was coaching with the Buccaneers. I was always scouting college guys. I thought he was really talented, a clutch kicker. He made big kicks in big games. I was like, if we get a chance to take him, we have to sign him. So we got a chance to sign him, and he came in and was all in with whatever I could teach him.”
He’s one of the many positive storylines to come out of the UFL – and he certainly won’t be the last. You can stay up to date on all UFL to NFL movement with our official tracker.
