On Saturday afternoon, the DC Defenders (5-1) will host the Louisville Kings (2-4). On what is slated to be a beautiful affair at Audi Field, Louisville will be playing with their postseason hopes on the line.
The DC Defenders are absolutely rolling. They have won five games straight, with an opportunity to clinch the playoffs this weekend. On the other side, the Kings have had an up and down year. After a 47-25 blowout over Dallas, they scored just three points in a loss to St. Louis last week.
Let’s take a look at what we can expect between these two teams on Saturday.
Quarterback Play
Right now, Jordan Ta’amu is playing like the MVP of the league. He has been outstanding the last few weeks, following what was a relatively slow start. When he’s got protection and time to throw in the pocket, Jordan will dial up any defense in the UFL. With such a stacked wide receiver room, Ta’amu has been lethal. Additionally, he’s used his legs wisely, taking green grass when it’s been open. DC won’t lose games if Jordan continues to play at this level.
“Jordan, I think, is a great player. He’s playing at a high level right now. When the shots are there, he’s taking advantage of his opportunities. He’s very efficient, especially when they run the ball. He is making very good decisions, and is very accurate when it comes to throwing. The Louisville Kings made the switch to Chandler Rogers in week five, and its been a mixed bag. He plays well when he has time to throw, but as we saw last week against St. Louis – a rattled Chandler Rogers can make mistakes. Even with his calm, cool, and collected attitude, he hasn’t played much pro football – it’s going to take time for him to develop and reach his full potential. If he can learn from a guy like Ta’amu on the other sidelines – using his legs when necessary – the Kings can win more games with Rogers.
Standout Playmakers
At wide receiver, the DC Defenders are absolutely loaded. It’s actually unfair. Braylon Sanders, Cornell Powell, Ty Scott, Erik Ezukanma, Keke Coutee – the list goes on. Powell, in particular, has really stood out over the last couple of weeks. His one handed touchdown reception against Dallas was a top play candidate so far this year.
Tight end play has been excellent out of DC this season. Briley Moore is still doing Briley Moore things – and Mason Fairchild has impressed. They will have some favorable matchups against Louisville defenders.
“I think they have a lot of really good skill guys on their defense, a lot of guys who can fly around. They’re a lot better than their record shows. Going into this week, we want to take what they give us, and take care of the football. We never want to be behind the chains. Did good on first and second down, which is what we want to do.” – Defenders QB Jordan Ta’amu
The Louisville Kings need to continue to feed James Robinson. He didn’t get many opportunities last week, and when he did, penalties negated big plays. Robinson has flashed since he joined Louisville, though – his playmaking abilities will be needed on Saturday.
Lucky Jackson continues to be a go to target for this Kings offense. The veteran has positional flexibility, and will be hungry to score some points against his old team. Lucky played for the DC Defenders in 2023.
The Injury Report
DC missed Gabe Taylor a week ago, and they’re trending towards him being MIA once again. Taylor has quietly had a nice season, showcasing that he belongs at this level. LB Ferrod Gardner also is dealing with a foot injury, and will miss Saturday’s game.
Of note for DC: WR Braylon Sanders has not participated in practice with a foot injury. He is expected to miss this game. With that in mind, Javon Antonio and Keke Coutee will likely be active.
Louisville desperately needs their offensive linemen to get back into shape. J.D. DiRenzo and Jaylon Thomas, two starting guards, are both questionable for this matchup. The Kings cannot afford to be missing two integral pieces up front.
Depth Chart Notes
TE Briley Moore’s status is potentially up in the air, as he has missed practice this week for personal reasons. If that continues into the weekend, Ben Bresnahan may finally see some action.
Linebacker Brandon Smith is no longer on the injury report, which is great news. DC could use the former 3rd round NFL draft pick back, especially with Gardner’s injury status.
Interestingly enough, Juwann Bushell-Beatty is already listed as a starter for Louisville, having just signed this week. This is probably a mistake, as he would likely back up Kellen Diesch. Juwann does have three years of spring football starting experience with the St. Louis Battlehawks.
“We lost two of our starting tackles, and that was tough last week. We’re healthy, we’re feeling better, and we got some guys back. Really excited about getting back on the field this week.” – Kings HC Chris Redman
With the release of DB Deantre Prince, Bryce Hall – the former fifth round draft pick with the Jets – is starting in his place.
Must-Win For The Kings
This is going to be a very difficult task for Louisville. They’re on the road, in a tough environment, playing against the best team in the league. What’s on the line? Their UFL playoff hopes. Sure, 2-5 won’t eliminate them from contention – but it makes it that much more difficult to get in.
“The opportunity is as good as four, five other teams have right now. We’re competing for that fourth, potentially third spot if we really get on a roll here. We do control our own destiny by the way we play. That keeps us mentally strong, and we just have to go out there and have great practices. There’s no give up, the guys are working hard. Our record could be a little bit better with a few plays here and there, but it’s not, and this is where we are at.” – Kings HC Chris Redman
The Kings simply have to find ways to not beat themselves. They cannot afford to commit those self-inflicted wounds that have haunted them many times this season. Penalties, dropped passes, etc. plagued Louisville against St. Louis.
Offensive line play has been an issue. The team has been banged up all year long, and when they finally appeared to get something positive against Dallas, injuries resulted in a regression once again. They’re going up against one of the most aggressive front sevens in the UFL this week, too. DC leads the UFL with 18 sacks on the year.
Coaching Matchup
Louisville Kings, Chris Redman: Even after a loss, the Kings haven’t lost any heart with Chris Redman at the helm. He’s a lovable guy, and his composed, heartfelt attitude is the foundation for the structure of this organization. Chris has a big challenge this week, taking on such an accomplished spring coach in Shannon Harris.
DC Defenders, Shannon Harris: The culture that Shannon Harris has constructed in DC is nothing short of remarkable. This team is loaded from top to bottom, and their preparation is next to none. For a second straight season, the DC Defenders are the team to beat.
Final Thoughts
While we’ve seen some upsets this UFL season, this game is not trending in Louisville’s favor. DC is as hot as ever, and the Kings cannot keep their offensive line healthy. Louisville needs everything to go their way in order to have a chance in this one.
