DC Defenders Throttle Houston Gamblers At Audi Field

On Saturday afternoon, the DC Defenders took on the Houston Gamblers, making their home debut at Audi Field. It was a monumental day for DC, as they hung the 2025 Championship banner in DC.

Heading into this affair, both teams were 1-1, having won in week two. It was a pivotal match for each respective group, as a 10-game season leaves little room for failure. Dropping to 1-2 would be far from idea, especially with the lack of conferences in the new UFL structure.

For the DC Defenders, this was an incredible homecoming after what was an unbelievable Championship run a year ago. Let’s take a look at what went down. It certainly got rowdy at Audi today.

First Quarter

The Houston Gamblers were put in a tough spot heading into this game. Both Hunter Dekkers and Nolan Henderson suffered injuries last week, meaning that Taulia Tagovailoa had to start. He got to camp very late, joining the Gamblers just a few days before kickoff.

This was evident throughout the first half, and early on as Houston went three and out, having to punt. DC, on the other hand, picked up right where they left off from last week. Deon Jackson broke loose for a 60 yard touchdown on their second play from scrimmage, putting DC on top early.

Houston had to punt once again, struggling to find much of anything positive. The Defenders took advantage, and with the leg of Matt McCrane, added four more points to their tally. Just several minutes into the game, DC led 11-0.

As the quarter came to a close, DC was knocking on the door of another score. However, Jordan Ta’amu would make a mistake – lofting a ball to the end zone that went right into the hands of Major Burns. With 15 minutes of action down, DC held an 11-0 lead.

Second Quarter

The issues would continue for Taulia. On 4th and 1, he attempted to scramble for the first, but fumbled. Bryce Thompson recovered for DC, giving them strong field position. Matt McCrane would knock through a 46 yard field goal, and the Defenders were back in business.

As if things couldn’t have gone worse for Tagovailoa in his UFL debut, another errant pass would get the best of him. He fired it downfield towards Jalen Moreno-Cropper, but the veteran DB Gareon Conley picked it off – taking it the distance for a house call.

DC would keep the foot on the gas pedal. After the Gamblers put together a relatively cohesive drive into scoring position, Derick Roberson sacked Tagovailoa on fourth down, turning it over on downs.

Several plays later, it was paydirt yet again for DC. On 4th and 3, Briley Moore took a designed fullback draw to the house, completely fooling Houston’s defense to make it 28-0.

Heading into halftime, the Defenders held a commanding 28 point lead.

Second Half

The final two quarters went exactly how you’d expect: Houston did what they could to get back into it, but couldn’t make much happen. The Defenders added another field goal off the leg of McCrane, making it a 31 point deficit.

Taulia finally cut into that lead, marching the team down into the red zone, finding Justin Hall for a six yard score.

Just when it appeared like Houston had a small chance at getting back into it, penalties haunted them. On their next possession, they got stuck in a 4th and 20 situation, having to go for it. They turned it over on downs, giving DC great field position again.

This time, Briley Moore and the guys were too much to handle. Moore found the end zone for a second time, mossing two defenders en route to the goal line.

A late touchdown from Taulia Tagovailoa to Justin Hall was overturned, due to Shannon Harris throwing the challenge flag. DC continued to pour salt in the wound, as Abram Smith punched it in from several yards out late.

DC would take it in what was the largest win margin in UFL history, 45-7 (38 points).

Standout Playmakers

RB Deon Jackson: Mama, there goes that man. Deon Jackson has been on an absolute tear, and despite only five touches in this blowout win, racked up 70 yards and a score. Heading into the season, we knew he’d be dangerous – but he’s exceeded expectations so far.

TE Briley Moore: Moore touched the ball twice – scoring on both reps. The designed fullback draw was sensational, and the catch was just as good. Briley is the life and blood of DC’s “culture”, so his two touchdown performance isn’t much of a surprise.

DE Derick Roberson: Roberson made Taulia’s life absolute hell. Derick racked up five tackles, two TFL’s, and two sacks. He set the tone early, with a TFL to start Houston’s first drive. Every single one of this tackles was solo.

DB Gareon Conley: Gareon is back as if he never left. He had two tackles, an interception (house call), and two PBU’s on the day. The veteran corner is on pace to be one of the UFL’s best in 2026.

Houston

WR Justin Hall: Hall did what he could. His nine receptions went for 69 yards and a score – and, he would’ve had 100+ with two scores, had Shannon Harris not thrown a late challenge flag. (Genuinely, why did he throw that while up 40?)

Major Takeaways

One thing is clear: the Houston Gamblers are not a functional team without a quarterback. You have to give credit to Taulia Tagovailoa for doing what he could, but he’s not someone who can lead this team to victory. In fact, he’s one of the main reasons why they weren’t able to be remotely competitive in this game. Eric Price’s playbook was trimmed down, and Taulia – who has not had a great pro career so far – made far too many mistakes.

“We didn’t execute. What’d we have, 13 penalties? We weren’t composed. That tells a bunch of the story. On third downs, we were going backwards. So far, it’s been two different football teams. When you give the ball away, you beat yourselves. Today, we were back to what we were in week one. Guys were trying to do too much. A bunch of penalties. We have to get that fixed.” – Gamblers HC Kevin Sumlin

On the other side of it, their defense is an issue. Last week, they got a couple of breaks with Corral’s interceptions, but this is three games in a row where they have simply been torched. Week one, it was Austin Reed. Last week, it was Birmingham’s receivers. Today, DC as a whole pummeled this unit. They’ve struggled to stop opposing offenses who are in scoring position, which is a scary trend this early in the year. Houston was penalized 13 times today. Seven of those were on the defense.

DC is back to playing their brand of football. There’s still plenty of improvements to make, but they’re poised to be in the playoffs once again. Interestingly enough, it’s Jordan Ta’amu who has been the piece holding them back just a bit. His accuracy has taken a dip compared to a year ago, with a couple of poor decisions allowing for Houston to hang around a bit longer than they should’ve.

Defensively, Blake William’s group was electrifying today. Granted, they played against a quarterback taking his first UFL snaps, but Houston was a putrid 1-7 on fourth down – and they weren’t much better on third (4-14). The Defenders sacked Taulia four times, generating a couple of turnovers as well.

Final Thoughts

It was an incredible atmosphere at Audi Field today. The crowd was buzzing, with over 12,000 in attendance. From start to finish, they were loud, boisterous – and drank a lot of beer. DC even got to unveil their new mascot: a snake.

At 2-1, DC is feeling pretty good about the direction they’re heading in. For Houston, they need one of their quarterbacks to get healthy. It’s tough, as they are on a short week – playing on Thursday night against Louisville.

Week three of the UFL will continue tomorrow, with a double header on ABC.
