Sunday’s slate in the UFL will feature a double header on ABC. First up, the Dallas Renegades (2-0) host the Columbus Aviators (0-2), in what might be the most lopsided contest of the week.
The Dallas Renegades are absolutely rolling. They’ve manhandled Houston and St. Louis over the first two weeks of action, looking like the clear cut best team in the league. Meanwhile, the Columbus Aviators are 0-2, allowing a league-high 67 points in those two losses.
Let’s take a look at what we can expect Sunday morning at Toyota Stadium.
Quarterback Play
It’s way too early to call for a league MVP, but if that award were given out today, it would go to Austin Reed. He’s been unbelievable, leading the league by a wide margin with over 600 passing yards and seven touchdowns through two games. Reed’s a natural-born leader, moving past his mistakes quickly to continue playing at a high level. There’s no question about it: he will be back on an NFL roster following this season.
On the other hand, Jalan McClendon has gotten the opportunity to be QB1 for the first time in his career. He hasn’t been terrible by any means, and hasn’t had much help from his O-Line. However, ball security has been an issue for him early on. McClendon lost a couple of fumbles against DC last Friday. That can’t happen again if Columbus wants to be competitive with the best team in the league. McClendon also hasn’t had much of a chance to unload his big arm – which, hopefully will change on Sunday.
Standout Playmakers
All hail Tyler Vaughns. He has been ridiculous, which is no surprise to those of us who have watched him in the UFL the last few years. Tyler had a hat-trick three touchdown performance vs. the Battlehawks on Tuesday night – a very good Battlehawks defense at that. He’s becoming one of the faces of the UFL, and for good reason.
In the backfield, the Renegades saw Dae Dae Hunter return last week – which was welcomed. On his second touch, he broke loose for a 50 yard gain, showcasing just how dynamic he can be. Columbus, who had a difficult time slowing down the run last week, will need to keep eyes in the backfield on Dae Dae, as he can also catch the ball.
The Aviators haven’t had anyone really step up as “the guy” offensively. At wide receiver, more production needs to come from Juice Wells and Tay Martin. These two are explosive, and it’s on the coaching staff to make sure they get touches. Whether that actually happens, though, remains to be seen.
ZaQuandre White has been a pleasant surprise through these first two games. He’s been, really, the only consistent piece they’ve had, with scores in both affairs. He doesn’t have incredible breakaway speed, but White’s ability to get downhill, and his vision for the field make him a valuable weapon for Todd Haley.
Depth Chart Notes
There aren’t too many notable changes for either team heading into this matchup. For the Aviators, it is worth noting that Noah Dawkins is listed as the starting linebacker, over Fred Thompkins. Thompkins started in Noah’s place the last two games, but if Dawkins is actually starting, it’s the right move from the coaching staff. Fred had a poor 31.9 Defensive Grade via PFF, against DC.
Dae Dae Hunter is officially listed this time around. He was not on the depth chart last week, but played. Look for him to be involved on special teams as a kick returner, alongside Ajene Harris.
Can Columbus Get A Stop?
So far, Captain Munnerlyn’s defense in Columbus has been underwhelming. In fact, it’s been downright bad. Just watching the tape from the first two weeks, it’s clear to see that this unit is undisciplined – with no clear direction. Man coverage has not been working, but Captain continues to call it more often than not.
It’s frustrating, because the talent is there for Columbus. Cam Smith, D.J. Miller Jr., Tony Fields, Kenny Willekes, etc. – the list goes on – this defense has the pieces needed to be successful. Yet, Jordan Ta’amu didn’t even throw for 100 yards, and the team gave up 44 points.
The run defense has been atrocious, and it’s a real point of concern heading into this matchup. Dallas hasn’t ran the ball incredibly well, but with a healthy Hunter back in the lineup, it poises problems for Columbus. The Aviators allowed 229 rushing yards to DC in week two, with zero answers for Deon Jackson or Xazavian Valladay.
According to PFF, Columbus has the worst-graded defense in the league, by over 10 points. Going up against an offense like Dallas will be a serious task. The Renegades are averaging 377 yards per game (1st in the UFL), while the Aviators are allowing 338 yards per game (second to last).
Considering this is spring football: anything is possible. We’ve seen severe underdogs walk into opposing team’s quarters and come away with upset wins. That said, if Columbus doesn’t clean up their defensive issues, they’re in for a long season.
Dallas’ Pass Rush
One of the only points of concern for Dallas: their pass rushers. They haven’t been terrible, by any means, but they’re lacking the same vicious attacks we’ve come to know from the likes of Vic Beasley and Chris Odom. This is something the team will need to address over the coming weeks. Willie Taylor can’t do it all on his own – he’s going to need some support in that room from others. Jalan McClendon has sneaky mobility, rushing for 55 yards on just eight carries against DC. Dallas will have to watch closely for his potential there.
With that said, their defense has been playing at a high level. This secondary is opportunistic, creating multiple takeaways in back to back appearances. Mike Gillhamer has his guys rolling defensively.
Coaching Matchup
Columbus Aviators, Ted Ginn Jr.: It hasn’t been the best start for Ted Ginn in Columbus. His team is 0-2, and statistically, they’re the worst in the league in a lot of categories. His lack of coaching experience has been evident through the first two games. Now, he’s tasked with going up against Rick Neuheisel – one of the league’s most experienced head coaches.
Dallas Renegades, Rick Neuheisel: Rick might be the oldest coach in the UFL, but he hasn’t lost a step. The Dallas Renegades are a well oiled machine with Neuheisel at the helm, smoothly taking down opposition week to week. It’s early in the season, of course, but Rick is well on his way to winning Coach of the Year if these types of performances keep up.
Final Thoughts
Given what we’ve seen through two weeks, the Renegades feel like the obvious favorites in this one. They’re home, have all the momentum, and are simply the better team on paper. If you’re a betting person, put that money on Dallas – they’re likely going to win this game by double digits.
