Baylor Bears in the USFL: Ahmad Dixon

Today we will continue taking a more in-depth look at the five former Baylor Bears who are currently playing in the United States Football League (USFL).

Ahmad Dixon, who has been a standout athlete for many, many years, is 30 years old and still going strong — being selected by the Philadelphia Stars in the 8th round of the 2022 USFL Draft.

Dixon, a 6-foot, 210-pound safety, was originally selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 7th round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

As a true freshman at Baylor in 2010, Dixon played in 11 games as a backup safety and also played on the Bears special teams unit — totaling 16 tackles and one forced fumble. He became a starter his sophomore year, garnering 89 tackles and one interception.

During his junior campaign with the Bears in 2012, Dixon started 13 games while picking up 102 tackles, two interceptions and one sack. In 2013 as a senior, the star safety started 12 games and finished the year with 81 tackles and one interception while also receiving second-team All-Big 12 and second-team All-American honors.

Following his collegiate career at Baylor, Dixon’s NFL stint with the Cowboys was a short-lived one: although he made the cut for the regular season roster, he was waived by Dallas for being late for a team meeting in September 2014.

Shortly thereafter, Dixon was signed to numerous NFL practice squads, including the Minnesota Vikings (first stint on Sept. 3, 2014), Chicago Bears (Sept. 8, 2014), Miami Dolphins (Nov. 25, 2014), and once again the Vikings (second stint on Dec. 6, 2014), before finally making the active roster for Minnesota on Dec. 17, 2014.

After being released by the Vikings in May 2015, Dixon spent two stints with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (Dec. 2016 and Jan. 2018) while also playing a season in The Spring League in 2018.

Dixon also spent some time in the 2020 version of the XFL before the season was shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, being selected in the 6th round by the Los Angeles Wildcats. In just five games with the Wildcats, he garnered 44 tackles prior to the league suspending all operations on Apr. 10, 2020.

Bringing us to 2022, where Dixon is now playing for the USFL’s Stars in the league’s inaugural season. Thus far, the 30-year-old safety has picked up 17 tackles and one interception.

Fun fact: Dixon also grew up in Waco, Texas, before playing at Baylor and attended Midway High School, garnering first-team All-District 16-4A and first-team All-State honors as a senior in 2010.

Next game for Dixon and the Philadelphia Stars (2-2, 2nd place in the North): a battle against the undefeated Birmingham Stallions (4-0, 1st place in the South) on Sunday, May 15 at 11 am Central Time on NBC.
