Last week the spring football world was rocked when news started making the rounds that the XFL and USFL were possibly in talks to merge.
At the time details were slim, and since then the rumor mill has been in full motion. We had been expecting the deal to close in short order, or at minimum get a comment from the league on the matter.
Just now, the XFL and USFL put out a join statement officailly announcing their intent to merge.

XFL AND USFL ANNOUNCE INTENT TO MERGE
NEW YORK – September 28, 2023 – Today, the United States Football League (“USFL”) and the XFL announced their intention to merge.
Subject to customary regulatory approvals and if the transaction is consummated, the new league will establish best-in-class operations based on the most recent seasons of both leagues. This historic combination will anchor professional spring football with substantial capabilities and resources to ensure future growth and continue to enhance the development of the collective players, coaches, and staff that are coming together.
More details regarding the new league will be announced at a later date.
There’s still work that needs to be done behind the scenes before the deal is closed, but this is a major step towards this becoming a reality.
The release doesn’t mention a new name, or which teams will be in play; but does state that more details will come at a later date. Even though the name is not specifically listed, many were quick to notice that the USFL registered a trademark for ‘National Spring Football League’ yesterday.
UPDATE: Official statement from the #USFL regarding this merger.
The #XFL and USFL will be merging, and with the recent trademarks for the #NSFL and the National Spring Football League, it certainly seems to be heading in that direction. https://t.co/0KGKCyRMRP pic.twitter.com/7lTwKLkFJY
